imai is full of energy for the spring season. This weekend imai will be at the Rotterdam (IFFR) film festival, and then just a few days later at the Transmediale in Berlin.

Die Ausstellung Bilder gegen die Dunkelheit. Videokunst aus dem Archiv des imai – inter media art institute wird erstmals eine repräsentative Auswahl an Videokunstwerken aus dem Archiv des imai ans Licht bringen. Vor sechs Jahren wurde das imai in Düsseldorf gegründet, um die umfassende Videokunstsammlung der Kölner Medienagentur 235 Media aufzunehmen. Seither hat das Archiv die Werke bewahrt und mit Neuzugängen ergänzt. In Kooperation mit dem KIT wird nun in Düsseldorf ein Einblick in den beachtlichen Archivbestand des imai zu sehen sein.

Mit einer großen Anzahl von Einkanalvideos, die den Schwerpunkt des imai-Archivs bilden, und mehreren Installationen lässt sich ein Überblick über die Entwicklung der Videokunst von der Frühzeit in den 1970er Jahren bis in die Gegenwart gewinnen. Ausgehend von den Videopionieren, die sich in den 1970er und 1980er Jahren besonders im Rheinland formiert haben, wird die Ausstellung zu jungen Positionen dieser technologiebasierten Kunstform überleiten.

In Kürze werden Sie auf der imai website über die teilnehmenden Künstler und das Beiprogramm zur Ausstellung informiert.

Presented at KIT – Kunst im Tunnel , Mannesmannufer 1b, 40213 Düsseldorf

The exhibition Images against Darkness (Bilder gegen die Dunkelheit) will highlight a representative selection of video art works from the imai archive for the first time. imai was founded six years ago in Düsseldorf to take on the extensive video art collection of the Cologne media art agency 235 Media. Since then the works have been stored in the archive and new works have been added. In co-operation with KIT there will now be an opportunity in Düsseldorf to get a look at the impressive works contained in the archive.

A large number of single-channel videos which form the main part of the imai archive and a number of installations give an overview of the development of video art ranging from the early seventies until today. Starting with the video pioneers who in particular came together in the seventies and eighties in the Rhineland area, the exhibition will also introduce new perspectives of this technology-based art form.

Via the imai website we will shortly provide information about the participating artists and the accompanying program of the exhibition.

VIDEOSKOP – Blicke von außen auf die Videokunstsammlung des imai

In der neuen Online-Reihe VIDEOSKOP lädt das imai internationale Kuratoren, Galeristen und andere Videokunstexperten ein, eine Arbeit aus der umfangreichen Sammlung der Stiftung auszuwählen und auf der imai – Website zu beleuchten. Wir lassen Blicke von außen auf die Kollektion richten und sind gespannt auf neue Perspektiven und erfrischende Einblicke in die Vielfalt des imai – Videoarchivs.
Die Reihe startete im Oktober 2011 mit einem Beitrag von Laura Györik Costas, (Centre d’Art Contemporain Genève), die Marina Abramovics Art Must Be Beautiful. Artist Must Be Beautiful (1975) ausgesucht hat. Es folgte die Frankfurter Galeristin Anita Beckers mit einem Text zum Video Lachen – Weinen (1978) von Jürgen Klauke.
Aktuell stellt Kathrin Becker (Leiterin des Video – Forum n.b.k.) den amerikanischen Künstler Paul Garrin mit seiner Arbeit Free Society (1988) vor.

VIDEOSKOP: View of the imai video art collection from the outside

In the new online series, VIDEOSKOP, imai invites international curators, gallery owners and other video art experts to select a work from the extensive collection of the foundation and to discuss the work on the imai website.

We welcome an outside view of the collection and are very interested in new perspectives and refreshing insights into the diversity of the imai video archives. The texts on the works from the invited authors offer information in the form of a commentary, review, explanation of the selection, or presentation of the selected artist.
The series started in October 2011 with a contribution from Laura Györik Costas, Centre d’Art Contemporain Genève about Marina Abramovics Art Must Be Beautiful. Artist Must Be Beautiful (1975). After that, the Frankfurt gallery owner Anita Beckers followed with a text on Jürgen Klaukes Lachen − Weinen (Laughing and Crying) from 1978. Currently the Head of the n.b.k. Video-Forum, Kathrin Becker, presents the American artist Paul Garrin with his work Free Society.
